Summer has arrived in Edmonton, and with it comes beautiful sunny days full of outdoor activities and entertainment. Whether it's a family bike ride through winding trails, a picnic overlooking the meandering North Saskatchewan River, or a relaxing stroll while admiring the lush outdoor spaces, there's something for everyone to explore this summer. Below are three nearby parks for you to discover.
Emily Murphy Park
Situated on the cusp of the Edmonton River Valley, Emily Murphy Park is a 13-minute bike ride from Citizen on Jasper and full of various amenities to enjoy. One of the best picnic spots in Edmonton; try bringing a picnic basket on your next outing to have lunch on a bench while admiring nature. Or, if you prefer to grill your own food, the park also has picnic sites with wood camp stoves and firepits (regulations permitting, of course!).
Emily Murphy Park is also home to one of Edmonton's boat launch sites. You can park your vehicle at the designated parking lot and carry your raft out to the water by hand. Don't have your own raft? You can still make a splash this July when The Paddle Station, a mobile kayak and raft rental company, comes to Edmonton. They'll provide the raft or kayak, paddles, life jackets, and other safety equipment, so you only need to book your boat and show up at the park's meetup spot.
Paul Kane Park
Paul Kane Park is a hidden gem in downtown Edmonton, boasting vibrant architecture and lush greenery. The park has lush plants, ample seating, and several walking paths. At the park's centre is a beautifully-crafted pond decorated with vegetation and flora. This park was redeveloped in 2020 with water conservation and sustainability in mind.
Only a six-minute walk from Citizen, Paul Kane Park should be your next destination for nature visits in Edmonton.
Government House Park
Named in honour of Alberta's first Lieutenant Governor, Government House Park will be sure to make you feel like royalty. Nestled in the heart of downtown Edmonton, the park is home to the historic Government House mansion, a nationally declared historic site. Tours are offered on Sundays and Mondays and are free of charge.
After your tour, take in the park's natural beauty by exploring one of the many paved trails that Government House Park has to offer. There are multiple vista points close by, so make sure to bring a camera to capture the vibrant nature of the park. It's one of the best parks in Edmonton for a picnic as well; there are several fire pits, washrooms, and picnic tables. So make sure to come early in the day to reserve your spot!
Government House Park is only a six-minute bike ride from Citizen and is featured on the Edmonton parks map, with tons of other nearby community amenities available.
